On the occasion of the 62nd African Union (AU) Day, former President John Dramani Mahama has issued a passionate call for greater investment in education and a bold continental push for reparative justice, emphasizing the need for a united front to confront Africa’s historical injustices.
Delivering a message to commemorate AU Day under the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” President Mahama stressed that promoting a deeper understanding of African history, culture, and global contributions must be a priority. He urged investment in educational initiatives that empower current and future generations.
“This is not a simple task,” he acknowledged. “It requires courage, determination, and a unified front.”
President Mahama, who serves as the African Union’s Champion for Reparations, reiterated his unwavering commitment to the cause and noted that the AU has declared 2025 as the year of justice for Africans and people of African descent.
“For too long, the legacy of slavery, colonialism, and neocolonialism has cast a long shadow over our progress. Reparations are not merely about financial compensation—they are about acknowledging the deep, enduring damage inflicted upon our people.”
He emphasized that reparative justice must include official, unequivocal apologies from nations and institutions responsible for centuries of exploitation. It also involves addressing structural inequalities, including unsustainable debt burdens, unfair trade practices, and the restitution of stolen cultural artefacts,” he said.
“We seek justice that goes beyond words. It must encompass practical measures to empower African nations, enable sustainable development, and ensure full participation in the global economy,” Mahama stated.
The former President called on African leaders, civil society, youth groups, and the diaspora to unite in the struggle for reparations and a more equitable future.
He urged, “Let Africa Day 2025 be a turning point. Let it mark the beginning of a renewed commitment to prosperity, opportunity, and equality for all our people.”
He called for unity and together in purpose towards a just and equitable future for all Africans and people of African descent.
