Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has launched a scathing attack on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), branding its handling of the investigation into former Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, as a “disgraceful media spectacle” rather than a legitimate prosecution.

He expressed outrage over the OSP’s failure to formally charge Ofori-Atta, despite labelling him a person of interest.

“What is wrong with this OSP? Is he conducting a public and media trial of Ken Ofori-Atta? No charges have been filed, so he’s not an accused person yet,” Agyepong fumed.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, he questioned the delay in prosecuting Ofori-Atta, arguing that if the OSP possessed credible evidence, it should have already initiated court proceedings.

“If the OSP has the evidence he claims, why hasn’t he charged Ken and begun prosecution in a proper court of law? People have been tried in absentia before. Does he need Ken’s physical presence to do his job?” he challenged.

Kwabena Agyepong further condemned the OSP’s attempt to label Ofori-Atta a “fugitive from justice,” asserting that such declarations fall solely under the judiciary’s authority. “That’s not the role of a prosecutor, who should be focused on proving his case before a judge,” he said.

The former NPP General Secretary accused the Special Prosecutor of hypocrisy, pointing out that the OSP had previously worked outside Ghana, citing threats to his life, while continuing to draw a public salary. “If he could operate abroad at our expense, why can’t he reach Ken? This is nothing but a PR stunt to justify an office that’s a wasteful burden on our public purse,” Agyepong charged.
