The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is grappling with fresh internal turmoil following allegations that General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua convened a clandestine midnight meeting on Sunday, June 15, with 12 Regional Chairmen in Accra to orchestrate the removal of First National Vice Chairman, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey.
According to sources, the meeting aimed to rally the chairmen to pass a vote of no confidence against Buttey, preventing him from chairing a critical National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for today, Tuesday, June 17. Reports indicate that while four chairmen supported the plan, eight others rejected it. Of those in favour, two hail from coastal regions, and two represent middle belt regions, with one reportedly indebted to Kodua for support during a recent legal issue.

The alleged plot centres on accusations that Buttey made disparaging remarks about the party’s leadership, including a claimed radio statement where he labelled all current executives as failures who should resign.
Insiders reveal that Kodua, a close ally of outgoing National Chairman Stephen Ntim, is determined to block Buttey from assuming the acting chairmanship, fearing Buttey’s resistance to Kodua’s agenda and potential interference with party structures. Kodua is also accused of initially concealing Ntim’s health condition from party leaders until Ntim’s family issued a public statement, urging the party to refrain from exploiting the issue for political gain.
Further allegations suggest Kodua encouraged the NPP’s UK branch to petition for Buttey’s suspension. Sources claim Kodua’s leadership is losing support due to perceived weaknesses, prompting him to manipulate internal electoral processes by altering the voter album and changing database management software.
Additionally, Kodua faces accusations of raising substantial funds in the party’s name without providing accountability, reportedly claiming authorization from the National Chairman.
The unfolding drama threatens to deepen divisions within the NPP as it navigates critical internal processes ahead of upcoming elections.
