The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially set January 31, 2026, as the date for an early presidential primary.

This decision, aimed at electing the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, was reached during a National Council meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Party leadership has framed the move as essential to filling a perceived “leadership vacuum” and bolstering ongoing reorganization efforts following their defeat in the 2024 polls.

This step was prompted by a report from the Constitution Amendments Committee, led by Frank Davies. The committee, tasked with synthesizing proposals from NPP members and stakeholders, advocated for an expedited timeline for the presidential primary. Their report underscored the urgency of a swift leadership transition to facilitate the party’s rejuvenation.

“After extensive deliberations, the National Council overwhelmingly adopted the Committee’s report, particularly the aspect relating to the Presidential Primary, which was strongly argued to be the best approach to fill the current leadership vacuum,” announced Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP’s General Secretary.

In preparation for this crucial internal election and broader party restructuring, the NPP will convene its Annual National Delegates Conference from July 18–20, 2025. The University of Ghana Sports Stadium will serve as the venue for this significant gathering, where proposed amendments to the party’s constitution will be a key agenda item.

A 9-member planning committee has been duly inaugurated to spearhead the organization of the National Delegates Conference. The committee is under the stewardship of Hon. Joseph Osei-Owusu, who will serve as Chairman. Henry Nana Boakye has been appointed as Vice Chairman, with Alhaji Haruna Mohammed taking on the role of Secretary. The remaining members of the committee are Dr. Charles Dwamena, Divine Otoo Agorhum, Hon. Abena Osei Asare, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Hajia Safia Mohammed, and Salam Mustapha.

The proposed constitutional amendments, which have been submitted by party members from various levels, will be circulated by the General Secretary prior to the conference. Delegates will be expected to thoroughly review these proposals, which will be formalized into motions to guide the debates during the three-day event.

“The Party implores all its members, particularly delegates, to study the amendment proposals which will be reduced into formal motions to guide the conference debates,” the NPP stated in the statement.
