A coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served between 2017 and 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration has formally declared their full endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Addressing the media at a press conference in Accra on Monday, the group, calling itself the ‘Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia’, emphasised that their endorsement was not only symbolic but also a strategic, operational commitment toward ensuring victory for the NPP in 2028.

“We are 220 strong, experienced former MMDCEs who have lived and worked at the grassroots level. Our support for Dr. Bawumia is total — from campaigning to mobilisation and logistics,” the forum said in its statement, read by a spokesperson.

Dr. Bawumia met with former MMDCEs before their press conference as part of his ongoing stakeholder consultations.

The group said the timing of their declaration was deliberate, coming ahead of the NPP’s scheduled flagbearer election in January 2026. They urged the rank and file of the party to unite behind Dr. Bawumia to secure continuity and consolidate gains made over the years.

According to the former MMDCEs, Dr. Bawumia’s record of public service, inclusive leadership, and proven electoral appeal make him the most credible and prepared candidate to lead the NPP into the future.

As Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia led critical policy reforms like the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and the paperless port system—initiatives that have significantly modernised our economy,” the group noted.

They further praised Dr. Bawumia’s data-driven governance approach and described him as ‘a unifier whose humility and accessibility resonate deeply with the grassroots.’

Speaking on the electoral value of Dr. Bawumia, the forum pointed out his wide recognition and appeal across various demographics as a key advantage.

“His image, vision, and message are already known nationwide. This alone gives us a competitive edge against an opponent who must present a new, untested face,” the statement read.

The forum claimed that starting the 2028 campaign with Dr. Bawumia gives the NPP a solid 41% electoral base, based on recent voting patterns and internal party data.

The former MMDCEs pledged to mobilise vigorously across all 16 regions through door-to-door engagements, grassroots mobilisation, countering misinformation, and fundraising to resource the campaign.

“This is not just a declaration—it is an activation. We’re already rolling out structures to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s victory in both the primaries and the 2028 general elections,” the forum emphasised.

The forum ended its address with a call on all NPP delegates and members to look beyond personal affiliations and consider the broader interest of the party and the nation.

“The stakes are high, and Ghana needs a visionary, competent, and trusted leader. Dr. Bawumia is that leader. Let’s rally behind him for a united and victorious NPP,” the group concluded.

The endorsement from this large bloc of former government appointees is expected to inject fresh energy into the internal campaign of Dr. Bawumia, who led the party in the 2024 general elections but was defeated by the NDC’s John Mahama.
