Brad Pitt is getting candid about his road to recovery and how Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) played a pivotal role in his sobriety journey.

The Oscar-winning actor joined Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast, where the two spoke for over two hours about their battles with alcoholism. Pitt revealed that he and Shepard met at an AA meeting, which became a turning point in his life.

Reflecting on his first experience with the group, Pitt admitted he felt “shy” at first but quickly warmed up to the process.

“I’m generally a bit shy in any situation at first,” he said. “But I don’t know, I just remember getting my arms around it pretty quickly, and it became a thing for me. It was really like something I’d look forward to.”

Encouraged by a friend who assured him the meetings were a safe space, Pitt gradually opened up.

“I am a stubborn f–k, but when I’ve stepped in s–t, I’m pretty good at taking responsibility and owning up to it,” he shared. “I was really open. I was trying anything and everything. It was a difficult time. I needed to reboot. I needed to wake the f– k up in some areas.”

He described the experience as deeply moving—not just for what he learned about himself, but for what he witnessed others share in the group.

“It was just incredible men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches—and a lot of humour with it,” Pitt said. “I thought it was a special experience.”

Pitt has spoken previously about his journey to sobriety, particularly after his high-profile 2016 divorce from Angelina Jolie. In a 2019 New York Times interview, he described that period as a wake-up call.

“I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,” he said at the time. “You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”

Now, Pitt says, sobriety has become not just a personal goal but a path of transformation and healing.
