Renowned New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, has thrown his weight behind reports suggesting that former President John Agyekum Kufuor has privately urged ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians for the economic and governance failures of his administration.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints on Saturday, June 28, Dr. Kennedy revealed: “I have heard from the grapevine that President Kufuor has suggested to President Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians. This is advice I agree with. He must apologise.”

Dr. Arthur Kennedy, a former NPP flagbearer aspirant, justified his stance by citing widespread corruption, impunity, and arrogance of power that characterised the Akufo-Addo era. “There was hardship. The electorate endured all that and decided to give them the sack during the election,” he asserted.

His remarks followed recent comments by ex-President Kufuor at the launch of the Patriotic Institute, where he questioned the NPP’s declining electoral fortunes. “How come our fortunes have been dwindling since 2016, 2020, and now our current state?” Kufuor asked pointedly.

Adding to the debate, former Ghana School of Law Director, Kwaku Ansah-Asare, lamented the party’s leadership vacuum and ideological drift. “The NPP, as we speak, has no leader… We need authoritative voices like the late BJ da Rocha or Peter Ala Adjetey to restore order,” he said.

The NPP’s decision to schedule its flagbearer election for January 31, 2026—against its constitutional timeline—has triggered internal discontent and public scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Kufuor has emphasised that the party’s path to political recovery lies in choosing a compelling and credible flagbearer. “It is one man, one vote. If we want power, we must present someone who connects with the general electorate and offers real solutions,” he advised.
