Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has challenged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to formally withdraw from the upcoming Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun if their boycott claims are genuine.

He accused the NPP of misleading the public by announcing a withdrawal while their candidate remains listed on the official ballot.

Gbande urged the NPP to submit a formal withdrawal letter to the Electoral Commission, stating, “The NPP is not our rival in this election. They claim to have withdrawn, yet their candidate’s name is still on the ballot. I challenge them to officially notify the Electoral Commission of their withdrawal.”

The rerun, set for 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North on Friday, was ordered by the Electoral Commission following disruptions in the December 2024 parliamentary elections that prevented complete result collation. The NPP has declared it will not participate, calling the rerun unlawful and citing ongoing legal disputes. Gbande dismissed these claims, alleging the NPP is using excuses to mask its internal disarray.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Wednesday, Gbande criticised the NPP’s eight-year governance, accusing them of neglecting Ablekuma North. “While President Akufo-Addo brought development to his hometown of Kyebi, he ignored Ablekuma North, a supposed NPP stronghold, leaving it underdeveloped,” he said.

He portrayed the NPP as a disorganised and fractured party, unfit to compete effectively. “They are in disarray, divided, and unprepared for any election,” he asserted, suggesting their boycott stems from their candidate’s lack of popularity and electability.

He emphasised that the Electoral Commission’s rerun will proceed with or without the NPP’s involvement. Gbande also aimed at the NPP’s legacy, stating, “Ghanaians will not forget the eight years of fraud and mismanagement under President Akufo-Addo’s administration. The scars remain fresh in the nation’s memory.”
