The Electoral Commission has officially declared Ms. Ewurabena Aubynn of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the duly elected Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma North Constituency, following a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations.

Ms. Aubynn polled 34,090 votes to defeat her closest contender from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 33,881 votes — a narrow margin of 209 votes. Her victory brings finality to months of electoral disputes and political uncertainty in the constituency.

The rerun became necessary after irregularities and disputes in the December 7, 2024, general elections rendered the results in parts of the constituency unverifiable. Both the NDC and NPP had challenged the initial outcome, citing concerns over missing pink sheets and other anomalies. Consequently, the Ablekuma North Constituency remained without representation in the 9th Parliament for over seven months.

Thursday’s rerun, though peaceful in several areas, was characterised by low voter turnout, with less than the expected 6,000 registered voters turning up at the polls. The exercise was also marred by pockets of violence, including reports of assaults on journalists, a former Minister of State, and a party official at some polling centres.

The Electoral Commission has assured the public of its continued commitment to ensuring transparency and integrity in the electoral process.
