Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and presidential hopeful, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has sounded the battle cry ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested flagbearer race within the ruling party.
Addressing journalists shortly after nominations officially opened on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Agyepong projected confidence despite acknowledging the uphill task ahead. “It’s going to be tough—I’m not making any bones about it,” he stated frankly.
He highlighted the formidable profile of his main contender—widely presumed to be a former Vice President with a 16-year presence at the top of Ghana’s political landscape—but stressed that his own deep roots within the party and connection with its base remain his strongest assets.

“I’ve been out of the limelight for a decade, but the level of enthusiasm from the grassroots is humbling. They haven’t forgotten I was among those who built this party from the ground up. I’m the only one in this race who’s been elected General Secretary,” he said.
Agyepong is expected to pick up his nomination forms within the week. He reiterated his commitment to unifying the party and regaining the public’s trust.
“With me, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory. I am the surest bet to bring back the confidence of the Ghanaian people and lead us to reclaim power in 2028,” he declared.
The NPP’s flagbearer contest is set for January 31, 2026, as the party gears up to select a candidate to lead it into the 2028 general elections.
