The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced it will launch robust and purposeful operations in Bawku and surrounding communities to enforce peace, protect civilians and restore calm amid a surge in deadly violence.
In a forceful declaration, the military warned it would use all necessary force to restore law and order as it transitions from peacekeeping to peace enforcement following a directive from President and Commander-in-Chief John Dramani Mahama.
The shift in strategy, according to the GAF, is necessitated by the repeated actions of armed elements whose attacks and reprisals have resulted in numerous casualties, threatened public safety, and destabilised communities.

“These violent acts point to a dangerous pattern that puts not only Bawku but the entire country’s peace and security at risk,” the military said.
The enforcement operation will cover Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla, with the Armed Forces emphasising its readiness to act decisively in these hotspots. Troops will be deployed to execute targeted interventions that prioritise community safety and law enforcement.
A strict curfew from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. is now in place in all affected areas and, according to the military, “will be enforced to the letter.”
GAF is urging the public, especially residents in the targeted zones, to cooperate with security personnel. It cautioned that any attempt to obstruct their operations, including attacks on security forces, will trigger an immediate and appropriate response.
“The Ghana Armed Forces remains unwavering in its constitutional mandate to protect the nation and ensure its citizens live in peace and security,” the statement added.
