Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has appealed to Members of Parliament (MPs) to make their health, family, and personal wellbeing a top priority as the House officially adjourns for recess.

He underscored the intense pressures of parliamentary duties and the toll it has historically taken on members’ health. He emphasised the need for MPs to reflect, recuperate, and reconnect with their families during the break.

“Mr. Speaker, as we proceed on recess, I urge Honourable Colleagues to prioritise their general wellbeing. The work we do is undoubtedly important, but so is our welfare and time with loved ones,” he stated.

In his closing address on Friday, August 1, 2025, marking the end of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament, Mr. Ayariga expressed concern over what he described as avoidable tragedies that have plagued Parliament since its inception in 1993. He lamented the number of preventable deaths among MPs over the years, calling for a renewed focus on wellness.

While encouraging rest and recovery, the Majority Leader also issued a caution regarding a growing culture of absenteeism and lateness, warning that it risks undermining the credibility and functionality of the legislature.

“Absenteeism and lateness to the Chamber by some Members continue to pose serious challenges to the smooth running of parliamentary business. We are entrusted with a sacred democratic responsibility—let us uphold that mandate with diligence and integrity,” he warned.

Mr. Ayariga announced the formation of the Northern Caucus, a new parliamentary bloc that brings together MPs from Ghana’s five northern regions. He revealed that the caucus had already hosted its inaugural Northern Development Conference in Tamale, engaging stakeholders across political, traditional, and civic lines to strategise for inclusive development in northern Ghana.

In a moving tribute, Parliament mourned the untimely death of Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, MP for Akwatia, who passed away on July 7 at age 40. Mr. Ayariga praised Kumi as a young man with immense potential and exceptional dedication, particularly notable for a first-time legislator.

Lawmakers also paid homage to highlife icon Charles Kojo Fosu, known to millions as Daddy Lumba, whose sudden passing on July 26 sent shockwaves across the country. Mr. Ayariga described both deaths as poignant reminders of life’s fragility and offered prayers and condolences to the bereaved families.

Parliament is scheduled to reconvene in three months. During the recess, MPs are expected to engage with constituents, participate in committee assignments, and take time for personal renewal, ensuring that governance continues even while the House is not in session.
