Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has officially joined the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, as a delegation of loyal Members of Parliament (MPs) picked up nomination forms on his behalf in Accra yesterday.
The high-powered team, led by MP for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, included Charles Forson (Tema West), Stephen Amoah (Nhyiaeso), Lawrence Agyinsam (Hemang Lower Denkyira), and Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, a former Deputy Finance Minister under the Akufo-Addo administration. The forms were handed over by the NPP’s Director of Finance and Administration, William Yamoah.
Mr. Agyapong, a former MP for Assin Central and a prominent figure in the party’s internal politics, is currently outside the country. However, his latest move signals a renewed and determined bid for the party’s presidential slot, having previously contested in the 2024 primaries.

According to campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng, the team of about 20 MPs opted for a low-key form-picking ceremony but hinted at a major event during the filing of nominations. “We want to keep things calm now, but we’ll make a statement when the time is right,” he said.
Agyapong’s campaign is expected to centre around themes of discipline, patriotism, and economic transformation—pillars he strongly advocated in his previous bid.
The NPP opened nominations on July 29, 2025, for the presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 elections. Aspirants have until August 28, 2025, to file their nomination papers.
The vetting process will run from September 15 to 22, with the Vetting Committee’s recommendations submitted to the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) on September 29. Aggrieved aspirants may petition between September 30 and October 3, with a final determination scheduled for October 7.
Qualified candidates will be announced on October 8, followed by balloting for positions on October 10 and the publication of the notice of poll on October 17.
The NPP presidential primary is set for January 31, 2026, with a potential run-off planned for February 14, 2026, if no candidate secures an outright win.
With Kennedy Agyapong now officially in the race, the contest for the NPP leadership promises to be intense, drawing attention from both party faithful and political observers across the country.
