The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared it will not contest the upcoming Tamale Central parliamentary by-election, following the death of the constituency’s MP, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 military helicopter crash.

The decision, reached at a National Steering Committee meeting on Monday, August 11, is, according to the party, a gesture of respect and a commitment to national cohesion in a period of mourning.

“In arriving at the decision, the Party considered many factors, including the circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat has become vacant and the possibility of a further polarisation of the country at this critical time,” NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong stated.

He stressed that it would be “inhumane and unconscionable” to subject the nation to a competitive political contest so soon after the tragedy.

The party argued that avoiding the tension and acrimony often linked with by-elections is the “greatest tribute” to the late MP and the others who perished, ensuring “a smooth and peaceful replacement for the good people of Tamale Central.”

The NPP confirmed it will not file nominations when the Electoral Commission opens the process under Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, maintaining that its position serves “the national interest.”

The statement also reaffirmed the party’s backing for President Mahama’s campaign against illegal mining, noting: “The greatest tribute that the NPP and the rest of the nation can pay in honour of the departed is not only to win the fight against Galamsey but also to ensure peace.”
