Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has made history by becoming the first footballer to win the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year award on three occasions.

The Egyptian international collected the prestigious honour for the 2024-25 season on Tuesday evening, securing the vote ahead of a strong field of contenders. The 32-year-old topped a six-man shortlist which included his Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, and Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

Salah’s performances during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign under new manager Arne Slot proved decisive. Throughout the Premier League season, he contributed 29 goals and 18 assists in 38 matches, cementing his role as the driving force in the Reds’ attack. His consistency and leadership were central to Liverpool reclaiming the league crown, ensuring he stood out among the nominees.

The award, voted for by fellow professionals across the league, carries particular weight as it reflects the views of those who compete directly against the winners. By securing the accolade for a third time, Salah has etched his name in English football history, becoming the most decorated player in the competition’s individual honours.

Caldentey Named Women’s Player of the Year

On the women’s side, Spain international Mariona Caldentey was recognised as PFA Women’s Player of the Year. The Arsenal forward delivered a standout campaign in both domestic and European competitions, edging out a competitive shortlist featuring her teammate Alessia Russo, Chelsea midfielder Erin Cuthbert, Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, and Manchester City duo Mary Fowler and Yui Hasegawa.

Caldentey’s impact was felt across multiple fronts. She scored nine goals and provided five assists in the Women’s Super League, while also netting eight times in the Women’s Champions League. Her goalscoring prowess played a pivotal role in Arsenal lifting the Champions League trophy for only the second time in the club’s history.

Rogers and Smith Secure Young Player Awards

The men’s young player award went to Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the Premier League. The 22-year-old registered eight goals and 11 assists in 37 league matches, form that not only established him as one of the most exciting emerging talents in English football but also earned him a first senior call-up to the national team.

Rogers overcame competition from Arsenal duo Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, as well as Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, to secure the award. His blend of creativity, energy, and end product proved vital in Aston Villa’s push for a European place.

In the women’s category, England’s Ebony Salmon Smith also collected the young player honour after a season that highlighted her growing influence and potential at the highest level.

A Historic Night for Salah

While the evening celebrated a range of achievements across English football, the spotlight inevitably fell on Salah’s historic milestone. Already regarded as one of the Premier League’s greatest imports, his third PFA Player of the Year title further underlines his enduring excellence and influence.

From his debut season at Liverpool to this latest accolade, Salah has consistently combined goals, assists, and leadership at the very highest level. His place in the game’s history books is now assured, with his record-breaking achievement unlikely to be surpassed any time soon.
