The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially set September 30, 2025, for the Tamale Central parliamentary by-election following the tragic passing of incumbent MP Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.
In a statement issued today, the EC said the vacancy has triggered Article 112(5) of the Constitution, which mandates a by-election to fill the seat.

Nomination forms are available for download at www.ec.gov.gh from August 19 to September 10, 2025. Completed forms must be submitted in person — by candidates, proposers, or seconders — at the EC’s Tamale Metropolitan Office between September 8 and 10, during the hours of 9:00 am–12:00 pm and 2:00 pm–5:00 pm daily.
The Commission outlined strict nomination requirements:
- Each candidate must be proposed and seconded by two registered voters in the constituency with the endorsement of 18 additional voters.
- Four copies (quadruplicate) of completed forms must be filed.
- Two recent bust-sized photographs (red background) are required.
Filing fees have been pegged at GH₵10,000, with a discounted rate of GH₵7,500 for women and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
Signed by EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, the notice urges all stakeholders to take due note as the process to elect a new representative for Tamale Central gets underway.
