The team investigating the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people has pledged full transparency in uncovering the cause of the tragedy.

At a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, August 26, Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB Ghana), John Mmeb Kenyan Wumborti, stressed that the objective of the probe was to prevent future disasters, not to assign blame.

“The purpose of the investigation is not to apportion blame but to avoid future occurrences. We are committed to capacity building by training investigators and airline operators,” he said.

Captain Paul Forjoe, a retired pilot and investigator with AIB Ghana, appealed for patience from the public, assuring that the official findings would be credible and transparent.

Wumborti noted that the Bureau has been proactively working to avert potential accidents. “We are working behind the scenes, guided by high standards, and that’s why some potential accidents are foiled. It does not mean we are only active when there is an accident,” he added.

The Ministry of Defence on Monday confirmed that the Investigation Board, chaired by the National Security Coordinator, had formally commenced its work. The board includes members of the Ghana Air Force and the AIB Ghana of the Civil Aviation Authority.

The Ministry also disclosed that the United States is providing technical support, with U.S. Air Force investigators offering expert advice.

A preliminary team was set up on the day of the crash to gather initial evidence and submitted its findings to the main board on August 25. The board has been given 30 days to present a comprehensive report.
