A three-member committee investigating the controversial death of a 31-year-old patient at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has submitted its final 39-page report to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

The April 13, 2025, incident, widely believed to have been caused by medical negligence, sparked public outrage and triggered an indefinite strike by doctors at the facility after an unannounced ministerial visit led to a standoff with staff.

The episode also saw the removal of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer.

The independent investigative body, chaired by Dr. Abdula Raheem Mohammed with members Halid Abdul-Rauf Esq. and Dr. (med) Takyi Duayeden, conducted 12 sittings over two months. They engaged relatives of the deceased, hospital staff, and other stakeholders while also reviewing standard operating procedures.

“Our work produced key findings and far-reaching recommendations aimed at improving the overall efficiency of healthcare delivery at TTH,” Dr. Mohammed stated.

The committee cited systemic failures, including broken-down equipment, persistent water and power outages, and shortages of essential medical supplies, as major obstacles confronting the hospital.

Minister Akandoh, upon receiving the report, assured the public that its findings and recommendations would be carefully reviewed and implemented.

“This issue was of great public concern. Now that the committee has presented its report, I can assure you we will study it thoroughly and ensure its recommendations are carried out to enhance service delivery,” he pledged.

The report is expected to shape urgent reforms at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and restore public confidence in healthcare services at the facility.
