President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit, firmly declaring that he will not contest the 2028 elections.

In a statement from the Presidency, Mr. Mahama said his decision strengthens his determination to enforce fiscal discipline and end the recurring cycle of election-year overspending that has historically plunged Ghana into economic crises.

Speaking during a three-day state visit to Singapore, where he held bilateral talks with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the President condemned the practice of incumbent governments bypassing fiscal safeguards to woo voters.

I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” Mr. Mahama assured.

Highlighting Ghana’s economic turnaround under his administration since his return to power in 2024, he cited a rapid decline in inflation and interest rates, coupled with a significant appreciation of the cedi.

His remarks also directly counter claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he harbours plans to extend his stay in power beyond his constitutional limit.

The Singapore visit focused on strengthening economic ties and boosting investment opportunities between the two nations.
