Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has claimed that his political career has been defined by sacrifice and loyalty to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as he officially declared his bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Speaking after submitting his nomination forms Thursday morning, he recounted critical moments when he risked his career and reputation for the party’s survival.

“That is why I did not hesitate to leave my job at the African Development Bank in 2012, why I stood as the star witness in 2013, and why I conceded in 2024 to preserve peace. You can be sure that with Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer, I shall not hesitate to put my all on the line for the NPP and for Ghana,” he stated.
Speaking of his sacrifice and track record, Dr. Bawumia said he had visited every constituency at least five times over the past 16 years to campaign and work for the NPP.
As Vice President, he championed several landmark initiatives such as the GhanaCard, Mobile Money Interoperability, Agenda 111, the Zongo Development Fund, Zipline’s drone medical delivery service, and the Paperless Ports system.
“The implementation of these practical initiatives has resulted in many people saying that I have been the most effective Vice President in Ghana’s history. Given the opportunity, I can equally become one of the most effective presidents Ghana will have.”
Dr. Bawumia anchored his bid on the party’s rich heritage, citing the leadership values of J.B. Danquah, K.A. Busia, and Victor Owusu.
The NPP and Ghana, he said, are demanding a leader who embodies deep intellect, humility, respect, unity, courage, foresight, and resilience. That is what I offer,” he declared.
Calling for calm in the flagbearer race, the Vice President urged his colleagues to avoid attacks that could harm the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
“What we say against each other is what the NDC will use against us in 2028. Stop the internal attacks now. Stop the religious and tribal attacks now. If you claim you are a true patriot and want this party to win, let your actions show,” he said.
He acknowledged that economic challenges contributed to the NPP’s loss in 2024 but maintained that valuable lessons had been learned.
Dr. Bawumia promised a forward-looking agenda centred on job creation, grassroots empowerment, and a digitalized economy.
His key proposals include: A flat tax system for individuals, corporations, and imports; Constituency-based development and budgeting frameworks to empower local communities; 3% of GDP redirected to the private sector through local procurement to boost domestic production and jobs; and Greater support for women, the physically challenged, and vulnerable groups.
“My vision is to expand the Ghanaian economy through rich ideas and provide incentives for accelerated job creation. I am committed to restoring hope and reducing the cost of living for the average Ghanaian,” he pledged.
