Former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of contributing to the death of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi, the NPP’s 2024 parliamentary candidate for Akwatia.

According to Dr. Bawumia, Mr. Kumi’s health deteriorated as a result of pressure and sleepless nights brought on by a protracted election petition filed against him by the NDC.

Speaking in Twi during an interaction with chiefs and residents of Wenchi in the Bono Region, Dr. Bawumia alleged that: The NDC’s court case against the late Ernest Kumi, coupled with intimidation, caused him sleeplessness and raised his blood pressure. Twenty-six days after the court’s final verdict, he died.”

The NPP flagbearer made the remarks while paying a courtesy call on the Wenchi Chief, as part of a campaign tour to mobilise support for the party’s parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Solomon Asumadu, ahead of the upcoming by-election.

He urged residents to rally behind Mr. Asumadu, stressing that the NPP remains the party best positioned to deliver development and sustain progress across the country.

The Wenchi stop formed part of a broader campaign push by the NPP leadership to strengthen its grip on parliamentary seats amid stiff competition from the NDC.

Dr. Bawumia is also using such engagements to consolidate his base within the party as he seeks to secure re-election as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.
