The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has raised red flags over possible infiltration in Tuesday’s Akwatia by-election, warning that unidentified individuals may attempt to impersonate police officers.

Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Sunday, August 31, Mr. Mustapha disclosed that the party had picked intelligence suggesting that groups from the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions were preparing to wear police uniforms and disrupt the polls.

“Security goes beyond just men in uniform. We have picked up information that some hoodlums are planning to disguise themselves in police uniforms and carry out unlawful operations. We are bringing this to the attention of the police,” he said.

The NPP youth leader urged the Ghana Police Service to maintain high professional standards during the election, insisting that deployed officers must wear name tags and not conceal their identities.

“In our meeting with the police, we made it clear that we expect the usual standards — visible name tags and no masks. On Tuesday, any masked officer we see will not be considered a professional or a legitimate police officer,” he added.

Mr. Mustapha called on the security services to act decisively to prevent infiltration and safeguard the credibility of the by-election.
