Voters in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are heading to the polls today, Tuesday, September 2, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of incumbent Ernest Kumi.

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the hotly contested by-election, which has quickly become a decisive showdown between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NDC is fielding Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the NPP is banking its hopes on Solomon Kwame Asumadu. Both contenders have waged aggressive campaigns, drawing strong backing from party heavyweights and national executives who have made strategic appearances in the constituency.

Security has been tightened, with the Ghana Police Service deploying over 5,500 personnel to maintain peace and order throughout the electoral process. The police have warned against voter intimidation, violence, or any breach of electoral laws, pledging swift action against those who commit such offences.

The Electoral Commission has assured the public of a transparent and credible election, noting that special measures have been implemented to ensure the timely delivery of voting materials, close supervision, and efficient collation of results.
