The leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has apologised to the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, over a recent media attack on him.

The apology was rendered when the Association’s executives, led by President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, paid a courtesy call on the Minister in Accra yesterday. The delegation included former President Alice Darkoa Asare-Allotey, immediate past President Dr. Krobea Asante, and General Secretary Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum.

Mrs. Ofori-Ampofo said the remarks made in the media were unfortunate and did not reflect the Association’s commitment to dialogue. “We regret the incident and apologise to the Minister. Going forward, our priority is constructive engagement with the government to address the concerns of nurses and midwives,” she said.

Hon. Akandoh accepted the apology and urged the Association to continue to work closely with the government. “Dialogue remains the best path to solving challenges in the health sector. I assure you of the government’s commitment to improve conditions of service for nurses and midwives while advancing reforms to achieve universal health coverage,” he stated.

The Minister outlined several interventions being implemented, including the recruitment of 13,500 nurses onto the government payroll, the establishment of the Ghana Medical Training Fund (GMTF), retooling of health facilities, payment of arrears on nursing training allowances and National Health Insurance claims, and the absorption of half of admission fees for nursing trainees.

He pledged to ensure the full implementation of the collective bargaining agreement to improve the conditions of service for nurses.

During the meeting, the GRNMA leadership also presented concerns affecting healthcare professionals and called for urgent government intervention to enhance service delivery nationwide.
