Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has extended financial support of GH¢105,000 to cover the fees of some needy members of the Volta Region Students’ Association (VORSA)-Legon.
Presenting the cash donation at his office on Tuesday, the Effutu MP encouraged the students who are pursuing higher education at the University of Ghana not to allow financial difficulties to derail their academic journey.
Drawing from his own struggles as a young man, he said, “Life has never been easy. It is rough. But with your determination and your faith in God, trust me, no danger can overcome you,” he told the gathering.

The Minority Leader recounted moments from his student days, describing the hardship he endured and the sacrifices he made to pursue his education. He spoke about walking long distances, struggling to pay fees, and surviving on the benevolence of others.
“My dad lost his job at 39, and my stepfather, who was into politics, was demoted and made a watchman. My mother, a pupil teacher, also lost her work. At some point, I had no money at all. But here I am today,” he said.
He advised the students not to give in to despair despite their financial constraints.
“Please don’t give up. Some of you are depressed, and you don’t even know it. But take it easy. God has many ways of opening doors. Each day has its own promises,” he encouraged.
Handing over the support package, Afenyo-Markin stressed that his gesture was only the beginning of a longer relationship with the students. “I have 33 names here, and the total support for your fees comes up to GH¢105,000. I will hand it over to the group leader to ensure that you all receive it. Always knock on my door; this is just the beginning,” he assured.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Gideon Senator Xorvi, President of VORSA-Legon, expressed gratitude to the Minority Leader for his generosity and mentorship. He emphasised that their association is a non-partisan, non-profit body that welcomed members from all political backgrounds.
“I would like to thank you for accepting us and for supporting us as Patron of VORSA-Legon. People often mistakenly believe we are affiliated with a specific political party, but that is not the case. We are open to all and have members across political parties,” Xorvi said.
He pledged that the students would uphold the values Afenyo-Markin had imparted and work hard to ensure that his efforts were not in vain
Senator Xorvi prayed for the gift of life and continuity of such support in the future, adding: “We are very grateful for this, and definitely, we pray that this will continue in subsequent administrations.”
