The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr. Ayew Afriyie, has hit back at former Assin Central legislator, Kennedy Agyapong, over his recent criticism of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances of leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 elections.

Speaking in Kumasi on Tuesday, Dr. Afriyie challenged Mr. Agyapong to first account for why the NPP lost in his home constituency before questioning the competence of the former Vice President.

“If nothing at all, Dr. Bawumia ensured that Walewale was retained for the NPP. What happened to Assin Central? Kennedy Agyapong says Bawumia cannot secure power for the NPP, but he could not even retain his own seat. Even in his home region, how did the party perform in 2024?” he asked.

Dr. Afriyie, who served as a middle-belt campaign coordinator for Dr. Bawumia, said the former Vice President remains the most marketable candidate for the party. He cited Bawumia’s humility and unifying posture as qualities that continue to endear him to both party delegates and Ghanaians at large.

“Dr. Bawumia has never insulted or attacked any contender, even though some of them have cast slurs on his personality, tribe, or religion. He has maintained his composure and preached unity despite incessant provocations,” he stressed.

The Effiduase-Asokore MP expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia remains the NPP’s best bet for reclaiming power in 2028.

“Nothing is insurmountable in politics. People have boasted about staying in power for decades, but the tide has always turned. The Ghanaian people know what they want, and I believe Bawumia’s time has come to lead the country,” he said.
