The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akuapem North, John Evans Kumordji, says accountability exercises such as the public sitting of the Local Government and Rural Development Committee play a crucial role in ensuring effective governance.

According to him, When the system keeps MMDCEs on their toes, it ensures that when it is time for performance evaluations, everybody will make sure the right thing is done at the right time, so the government of the day succeeds.

Speaking during an interview after appearing before the committee last Friday, Mr. Kumordji highlighted youth unemployment as one of the municipality’s major concerns.

He pledged to harness government’s flagship initiatives, including the National Apprenticeship Program to provide opportunities for young people.

“Most of the youths are unemployed, so one of my visions is to ensure that whenever there are opportunities—be it scholarships, training, or apprenticeship programmes—I will make sure they are well applied to benefit the youth,” he assured.

The MCE also updated the committee on legacy projects under construction. These include a 0.6-kilometre of road within the township, and a 12-seater toilet facility with a 2,500-litre polytank at Larteh.

“We are making sure this facility is completed for the people of Larteh to use,” he said.

Mr. Kumordji acknowledged persistent challenges in sanitation and school dropouts, with many teenagers opting for commercial motorbike riding (Okada) instead of education.

“Because of the Okada business, most of the teenagers are dropping out of school. But I am in touch with the MP for the area, and together we are taking pragmatic steps to address these issues,” he assured.
