The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to sack the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Sam George, accusing him of wasting the nation’s time and resources over what they described as populist theatrics in the ongoing standoff with DStv operator, MultiChoice Ghana.

At a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, the Minority Caucus said the minister’s much-publicised campaign for a 30% reduction in subscription fees had collapsed into disingenuous political drama after he abandoned his earlier position and presented existing MultiChoice promotions as a “generational success story.”

Addressing the media in Parliament on Thursday, Ranking Member of the Information and Communications Committee, Charles Owiredu Asuako, stressed that since August 2025, Hon. Sam George has been advocating for a 30% reduction in DStv fees.

“But after months of grandstanding, sanctions, and needless brinkmanship, he has turned around to hail ongoing promotional offers that have existed since January as his victory. This is deceit, pure and simple,” he stated.

He argued that the minister’s actions had undermined investor confidence, created diplomatic tensions, and exposed his lack of competence in handling sensitive negotiations.

“His failure to grasp key issues during meetings and communicate the actual negotiated outcomes to Ghanaians, or a deliberate fabrication of what he was never able to broker, is evident. MultiChoice themselves publicly challenged him, denying his claim that there had been any agreed price reduction,” the Minority added.

Charles Owiredu accused the minister of lacking the temperament and emotional intelligence required for the role. “He has demonstrated the same by his numerous public utterances, insults to citizens, and industry players throughout this process.”

Hon. Charles Owiredu also demanded accountability for the GH¢10,000 daily fines the National Communications Authority (NCA) imposed on MultiChoice at the minister’s instance.

According to him, for this display of ineptitude, incompetence, and penchant for deceit, Ghanaians demand that the Minister render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians.

“He must account for the fines levied on DStv, and above all, he is unfit to continue as Minister. We therefore call on him to resign or for the President to fire him,” he stressed.
