The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has opposed Alan Kyerematen’s decision to name his newly formed political party the United Party (UP), describing it as an attempt to hijack the party’s historic identity and political heritage.

According to the NPP, the United Party name is deeply rooted in its political tradition, dating back to 1957 under the leadership of Dr. K.A. Busia. The governing party is therefore exploring legal avenues to prevent Alan Kyerematen from adopting the name.

Speaking to JoyNews on Friday, October 17, 2025, Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Kabiru, accused the former Trade and Industry Minister of robbing the NPP of its heritage and distorting the historical foundations of the party.

“The United Party was formed on October 13, 1957, and was later dissolved when Ghana became a one-party state. The current New Patriotic Party, which was formed in July 1992, traces its roots directly to that tradition.”

“It is therefore incomprehensible that in 2025, Mr. Kyerematen would name his new political movement after the very foundation on which the NPP stands. It creates confusion and undermines the party’s historical identity,” Kabiru explained.

The MP cited Section 10 of the Political Parties Act, which prohibits the use of a name that could mislead or cause confusion among voters. He called for legal action to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to revoke the provisional certificate granted to Alan’s party.

“I’m surprised the EC went ahead to grant a provisional certificate despite this clear violation. However, since it’s provisional, it can still be reviewed if a petition is filed,” he stated.

“Alan’s action breaches Section 10 of the Act and may also infringe on trademark laws. The NPP must act swiftly to protect its legacy.”

Despite the controversy, Alan Kyerematen officially launched the United Party (UP) on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Accra.

Describing the event as the dawn of a new era, Alan declared that the party’s mission is to unite Ghanaians beyond partisan lines and restore integrity to national leadership.

“Today, we lift Ghana UP — united in purpose, driven by integrity, and committed to prosperity for all. This is not just the birth of a political party but the rise of a national movement that puts Ghana first,” he proclaimed.
