Legislatures (CoSPAL) and the immediate past Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association [CPA] International.
In his new capacity as Chairperson of the Africa Group, Rt. Hon. Bagbin is responsible for coordinating and harmonizing the continent’s common positions on major IPU decisions and policies. The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament takes over from Ms. Angela Thokozile Didiza, the Speaker of the South African National Assembly who has left an excellent record of performance.
The Africa Geopolitical Group was established at the beginning of the 1950s as a geopolitical continental branch of the IPU, with the aim of ensuring a fair geographical distribution of seats on IPU’s Executive Committee, sub-committees, and other bodies of the IPU. The Group also prepares and coordinates positions on key issues on the agenda of IPU General Assembly Meetings and conferences, reviews vacancies within committees and groups of Inter-Parliamentary Union, and proposes candidates to fill such vacancies.
