Paul Baffoe-Bonnie: Chief Justice nomination referred to Parliament’s Appointments Committee

Parliament has formally initiated the process for the potential elevation of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to the office of Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin referred the nomination to the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, October 21. This action follows the reading of a letter from President John Dramani Mahama, dated October 14, 2025, which conveyed the nomination in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

President Mahama’s communication stated: “Following consultations with the Council of State… and in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, I have the honour to respectfully submit for the approval of Parliament the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.”

In his endorsement, the President lauded the nominee’s credentials. “Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has distinguished himself through unwavering integrity, sound judicial temperament, and a deep commitment to the rule of law,” President Mahama wrote. He further emphasized that the Justice’s leadership, administrative competence, and vision would serve to strengthen public confidence and advance reforms within the judiciary.

A seasoned jurist, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is a senior member of the Supreme Court, renowned for his extensive service, legal scholarship, and dedication to judicial integrity.

Following the referral, Speaker Bagbin tasked the Appointments Committee with undertaking the public vetting and subsequent reporting to the full House. He reminded Members of Parliament that while any member may attend the Committee’s proceedings, voting on the final report is restricted to Committee members.

The Appointments Committee is now expected to announce the date for the public vetting, paving the way for the plenary vote on the distinguished nominee.
