Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, securing 63.8% support in the latest nationwide survey conducted by Africa Police Lens (APL).

The poll shows that Dr. Bawumia leads in 14 out of 16 regions, while former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong tops in two regions. The survey also indicates that former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong has made noticeable gains in the Eastern Region.

“If elections were held today, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would remain the preferred candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections,” APL noted in its report.

APL explained that the poll was conducted using a Proportionate Stratified Sampling method, ensuring fair representation across all regions. In total, 30,631 delegates were interviewed nationwide.

“Our approach ensured that regions with higher delegate populations received proportionally larger samples. We deployed our trained in-house team for the interviews and maintained a dedicated call centre to verify and validate responses for accuracy,” the research team stated.

The regional breakdown of respondents was as follows: Ashanti (4,909), Greater Accra (5,115), Eastern (2,929), Central (2,704), Western (2,484), Western North (2,443), Volta (2,247), Ahafo (1,108), Bono East (1,089), Upper East (1,091), Northern (1,206), Bono (820), Savannah (740), Upper West (659), North East (649), and Oti (438).

The outcome of the survey consolidates Dr. Bawumia’s dominance within the opposition NPP and sets the stage for a competitive flagbearer contest ahead of the NPP’s presidential primary in January.
