Is the Majority Chief Whip losing control of Parliamentary cohesion?

The ongoing difficulty facing the Majority Chief Whip in mobilizing Members of Parliament for government business has become a critical concern, particularly as the NDC now commands a numerical advantage in the House. This situation raises deeper questions about the government’s ability to maintain control and push forward its legislative priorities.

The Chief Whip’s struggle to secure consistent support from his own caucus signals a major internal setback. As the officer responsible for attendance, cohesion, and backing government motions, he must adopt stronger, more strategic mechanisms to reinforce discipline within the Majority.

Beyond the opposition’s strength, internal dynamics within the Majority appear to be contributing to absenteeism. There is growing speculation about whether government priorities are misaligned with constituency expectations or whether internal disputes are eroding unity. These issues require immediate and honest introspection from the leadership.

To restore stability, the Majority Chief Whip must take decisive measures to rebuild trust, engagement, and commitment among MPs. A functional Parliament is essential for national development, and the current disconnection cannot persist.

Reclaiming control will require closer collaboration with government leadership to define clear priorities, address member concerns, strengthen communication, and build consensus around key policies. The cost of inaction is high, and the stakes for governance are significant.

Ultimately, the Chief Whip’s effectiveness will be judged by how successfully he restores cohesion and secures reliable support for the government’s agenda. His leadership in this moment will shape not only the strength of the Majority Caucus but also the government’s capacity to fulfil its mandate to Ghanaians.
