The Minority in Parliament is demanding that the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, be summoned before the House to explain what they describe as excessively harsh bail conditions imposed on former government appointees currently under investigation for alleged corruption.

The caucus argues that several of the affected individuals have remained in custody for weeks because they are unable to meet what they believe are unusually high bail requirements imposed by investigative bodies and endorsed by the courts.

Former NPP appointees

Addressing the House on Friday, November 14, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin emphasized that their request is not an attempt to interfere with ongoing judicial processes but a call for fairness, transparency, and accountability in the administration of justice.

“A bail is imposed mainly based on a charge sheet or the facts of the case, without the other party being fully heard, and that is quite worrying,” he said. “We are concerned, and we believe that if the Attorney General comes here to brief us on why some of these bail terms were imposed, we will be able to interrogate the matter.”

He added that the situation becomes critical when courts grant bail for former appointees and yet accused persons remain behind bars simply because the conditions are too harsh to satisfy.

The Minority insists that an explanation from the Attorney General is necessary to prevent potential abuses of prosecutorial discretion and to safeguard the fundamental rights of accused persons during investigations.
