Parliament has commenced the debate on the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, a document presented last Thursday, November 13, 2025, by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

Titled ‘Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation,’ the budget outlines the government’s strategic priorities for the coming year, focusing on consolidating macroeconomic stability, accelerating economic transformation and job creation (including the “24-Hour Economy” initiative), and strengthening the security and social sectors.

Dr. Forson’s presentation highlighted significant progress in economic recovery, citing a reported drop in inflation to 8% by October 2025 and an expansion of Real GDP by 6.3% in the first half of 2025.

The Minority in Parliament has heavily criticized the document, with some describing the Minister’s presentation as “mere lamentations” that failed to offer concrete solutions beyond re-hashing past economic concerns. They have also raised questions regarding fiscal accountability and the transparency of certain government expenditures, as well as the budget’s allocation for parliamentary oversight functions.

The Majority is defending the budget as a plan built on fiscal discipline and successful policy consistency, which it claims has restored confidence and stabilized the economy, particularly the Cedi. The budget includes major spending allocations for projects like the Big Push Infrastructure Programme and the expansion of agricultural mechanization through the deployment of over 4,000 machines in 2026.

The parliamentary discussions will continue for days, as Members of Parliament scrutinize the policy proposals and financial allocations that will shape Ghana’s economic direction in 2026.
