Atiwa East District Chief Executive (DCE), Ernest Owusu Ntim, has described the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba as a ‘prophet’ whose music transcended generations and borders. He urged Ghanaians to honour him with a befitting national send-off.

Speaking in an interview with the media following discussions on the funeral arrangements of the iconic musician, Mr Owusu Ntim stressed that Daddy Lumba’s contribution to Ghana’s music and cultural identity deserved a coordinated, dignified celebration involving the music industry, the media, and the state.

“I personally think he was a prophet. If you listen to his music, it cuts across generations. He spoke about life in ways that are still relevant today,” he said.

Global icon, not just a local star

According to the Atiwa East DCE, Daddy Lumba’s influence went beyond Ghana, resonating with audiences across the world.

“Even our friends in other parts of the world were expecting something bigger because of Daddy Lumba. It will take years before we see such an icon again in the music industry,” he noted.

He emphasized that the late musician’s death presents a rare moment for Ghana to demonstrate unity and appreciation for its cultural heroes.

Industry and government support

While acknowledging that funeral decisions rest with the family, Mr. Owusu Ntim called on key stakeholders to rally and organize a funeral worthy of the legend following controversies that marred his funeral.

“Once you die, the body belongs to the family, and they have taken over the body. But the number of people who were prepared to attend this funeral but were left disappointed shows how big Daddy Lumba was,” he said.

He proposed the creation of a dedicated donation account to support a well-organised event.

“We are ready to donate so that we can organise something big to honour him. Even if it is small contributions from the music industry, we are ready,” he added.

Media coverage and national unity

Mr. Owusu Ntim appealed to major media houses to give the funeral extensive coverage, describing it as a national moment of reflection and celebration.

“Other big media stations were expected to give this funeral massive coverage. We must take the opportunity to celebrate him properly,” he said.

However, he expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of coordination so far.

“My total concern is that I am not happy. We are expecting the family and stakeholders to come together to do something better for the country. We need to channel the energy properly to give him the honour he deserves,” he stated.

Something big

The Atiwa East DCE insisted that Daddy Lumba’s legacy must be preserved through a historic farewell.

“He’s the greatest. We need to do something big for him. Ghana must honour Daddy Lumba,” he said.
