Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC), Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, has announced that the Committee is recommending a major constitutional amendment that will lower the minimum age requirement for presidential candidates from 40 to 30 years.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Monday while presenting the Committee’s final report to President John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Prempeh said the recommendation seeks to promote youth inclusion, leadership diversity, and enhanced representation in Ghana’s democratic governance structure.

According to him, the proposal forms part of the Committee’s broader efforts to modernise key aspects of the 1992 Constitution, ensuring it reflects evolving democratic values and the growing capabilities of Ghana’s youthful population.

“The Committee recommends an amendment to Article 62(b) to lower the minimum age a person must attain to qualify for election as President from forty (40) years to thirty (30) years,” Prof. Prempeh stated.

He explained that the reform aims to encourage greater youth participation in national leadership, empowering competent and visionary young Ghanaians to contribute more meaningfully at the highest level of governance.

The CRC additionally proposed an extension of the presidential term from four years to five years, arguing that such a measure would strengthen governance stability and improve policy continuity.

The proposals are expected to spark significant national debate as Ghana continues its constitutional reform journey.
