The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has announced plans to carry out a mass burial of unclaimed and unidentified bodies as its mortuary reaches critical congestion levels.

According to a statement issued by hospital management, the mortuary has hit full capacity, prompting urgent measures to decongest the facility and ensure continued smooth operations.

The Hospital has therefore appealed to relatives, next of kin, and persons with an interest in any of the bodies to visit the facility within 21 days to identify and claim them. The deadline for claims, according to the statement, is January 18, 2026.

“Records indicate that about 320 unclaimed bodies are expected to be included in the exercise,” the statement confirmed.

Management stressed that any bodies remaining unclaimed after the deadline would be buried in line with approved medical and legal procedures, adding that the exercise would be undertaken in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The Hospital appealed to the public for understanding and cooperation, explaining that the mass burial was necessary to free space and maintain health and safety standards at the facility.
