Majority Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has applauded Parliament for reviving its media soiree and recognition night, describing it as a worthy initiative that underscores the vital role journalists play in strengthening Ghana’s democracy.

He stated that the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) remains a vital bridge between lawmakers and citizens, emphasising that the relationship between Parliament and the media is crucial to ensuring accountability and deepening democratic governance.

“Without the media, citizens will not know how their MPs represent them in the House or how laws are made,” he noted.

Speaking at the event last Friday on behalf of the Majority Leader, Hon. Dafeamekpor acknowledged the demanding nature of parliamentary reporting and urged Parliament to continue providing institutional support to enable journalists to discharge their constitutional mandate effectively.

Referring to appeals from the PPC for improved logistical support, he encouraged Parliament to consider even broader assistance.

“We appeal for your continuous institutional support for journalists covering Parliament. We must create an enabling environment that strengthens democratic participation and public trust,” he said.

He commended the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for sustaining a cordial relationship with the media.

“Under your stewardship, there has not been any conflict or tension between Parliament and journalists, and I want to commend you for that,” he stated.

He urged journalists covering Parliament to uphold professionalism, fairness, and accuracy while avoiding sensationalism and unnecessary partisanship.

“Journalism must inform and not divide. As we preach press freedom, we must also promote media responsibility,” he cautioned.

The Majority Whip further supported calls for better working conditions, travel exposure, improved internet facilities and institutionalised annual recognition for the PPC, stressing that such initiatives strengthen engagement and build trust.

“This platform builds relationships, strengthens engagement and clarifies misconceptions. We must sustain it,” he stressed.

He urged journalists to continue supporting democratic development, while assuring that Parliament remains committed to accountability and ongoing reforms.

While acknowledging occasional negative portrayals of Parliament, he encouraged the media to balance criticism with recognition of positive milestones.

Hon. Dafeamekpor emphasised that Parliament remains the ‘true ventilator of democracy,’ arguing that free and effective legislatures are essential to democratic survival.

“Every dictatorship will have a media, judiciary and executive. What will be missing is an elected National Assembly,” he said.

The Majority Whip praised the Speaker for introducing reforms that have enhanced transparency and made Ghana’s Parliament one of the most open institutions on the continent.

“Today, everything in Parliament is open — our meetings and deliberations. The credit goes to reforms championed by the Speaker,” he added.
