The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has issued a stern warning against what he described as a rising ‘sycophancy and bootlicking’ within the ruling party over support for a third term for President John Dramani Mahama.

He labelled such behaviour as a betrayal of the NDC’s founding principles.

Addressing the 31st December Revolution anniversary in the Volta Region, Kwetey expressed deep concern over members who prioritise personal gain over serving Ghana and upholding party ideals.

He said, “It saddens me when I see so much sycophancy creeping into our party. I see a group of people who believe that singing the praises of a leader is the only way they can survive.”

He slammed the calls for extended tenure for the President, describing them as undemocratic. “That is why you hear some of those people even making statements like there should be a third term. It’s nothing but sycophancy, pure sycophancy and bootlicking of the highest order.”

Invoking the legacy of founder Jerry John Rawlings, Kwetey noted that no one ever pressured Rawlings towards unconstitutional longevity, underscoring that the NDC was built on “discipline, accountability, and service to the people, not blind allegiance to individuals.”

Reinforcing the party’s revolutionary slogan, he said, “Cadres may go, Cadres may come, but the revolution has come to stay… It’s about us as a collective.”

Kwetey urged a renewed commitment to national interest, party unity, and the core values that established the NDC as a formidable force, stressing that the party’s survival depends on discipline and dedication to improving Ghanaian lives.
