The Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, has ordered a formal investigation into the sale of more than 300 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses, which were reportedly auctioned shortly before the 2024 general elections under the previous administration.
The inquiry follows disclosures by the Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, who indicated that several of the buses were sold at extremely low prices, with some going for as little as GH₵2,500.
Addressing journalists in Accra on Monday, January 19, Mr Bukari said the government is scrutinising the auction process to establish whether it complied with principles of transparency, value for money, and due process.

He explained that the relevant boards and management have been directed to review the circumstances surrounding the disposals and determine whether the assets were appropriately valued.
“The boards are reviewing the process to ascertain whether the buses were sold at prices that truly reflected their worth,” the Minister said.
He added that while the auctions were conducted under established procedures, questions have arisen regarding whether the transactions represented fair market value, prompting the need for further examination.
“I have instructed management and the boards to take another look at the process, and based on their findings, we will determine the next steps,” he noted.
Beyond the investigation, the Transport Minister said the government remains focused on addressing the immediate challenges facing public transport users across the country.
“Our priority now is to improve the current transport situation,” he said, adding that ongoing engagements with transport unions are expected to ease the burden on commuters.
He expressed confidence that the measures being rolled out would offer some relief as broader reforms in the transport sector continue.
