The political landscape in the Ayawaso East Constituency has been jolted as Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late MP Naser Toure, officially enters the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary to contest the upcoming by-election.

The by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026, follows the sudden passing of Naser Toure in early January. For the NDC, Ayawaso East remains a strategic fortress—an electoral stronghold the opposition has never breached since Ghana’s return to multiparty democracy in 1992.

Hajia Amina Adam’s decision to step into the political ring has stirred mixed reactions across Nima and Maamobi. While critics describe her entry as an emotional appeal for sympathy votes, her campaign team insists her move is “a duty to the people.”

According to insiders, the widow was compelled by mounting calls from community elders and women’s groups to continue her husband’s legacy of grassroots empowerment and social interventions. Her campaign is centered on service, accessibility, and locally driven solutions.

But her biggest test yet for the widow comes from seasoned politician and diplomat Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria. The legal practitioner, known for his fiery political style, sees his comeback as a “return home” to the community that raised him.

Despite being historically linked to the Akwatia constituency, Baba Jamal emphasized his Nima roots, telling Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen program: “It is true, by God’s grace, I will contest in Ayawaso East. I see it as a call to come and serve the good people of this community.”

In the fiercely contested 2024 NDC primary, Baba Jamal narrowly lost to the late Naser Toure, securing 525 votes against the incumbent’s 675—a result that cements his influence within the constituency.

The NDC Greater Accra Regional Secretary, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, confirmed that four other aspirants have also joined the race:

Dr. Yakubu Azindow: A consistent contender who polled 215 votes in 2024.
Mohammed Ramne: Renowned grassroots mobilizer.
Mohammed Abdul Salam (Abdul Salam Daru): Youth representative with strong local backing.
Najib Mohammed Sani: A rising intellectual force within NDC circles.

The party’s internal roadmap is already set:

January 27: Submission of nomination forms
January 28: Vetting, balloting, and appeals
February 7: Parliamentary primary election

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is fine-tuning its strategy, with General Secretary Justin Kodua hinting at plans to field a strong challenger. Whether they reintroduce Zak Rahman or unveil a fresh face remains uncertain, but the NPP hopes to break the NDC’s 70% electoral dominance in the constituency.

As the countdown continues, all eyes are on Ayawaso East—where emotion, legacy, and political ambition are poised to collide in one of Ghana’s most-watched by-elections of 2026.
