Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has formally announced his intention to contest the position of National Chairman of the party.

In an official statement on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Chairman Wontumi said the NPP has reached a critical stage that requires steady, principled, and committed leadership to maintain unity and strengthen the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“I, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), having consulted my Maker and sought the counsel of party elders, hereby declare my intention to serve as National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party,” the statement said.

The announcement follows the election of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer on Saturday, January 31.

He explained that his decision is not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to “strengthen, rebuild, and unify” the party following recent internal contests.

Describing himself as grassroots personified, Wontumi pledged to prioritize the welfare and concerns of all party members, from the elderly to the youth. He stressed that the current political environment demands courage, commitment, and a willingness to make sacrifices for the party’s success.

The declaration comes as the NPP prepares for changes in its national executive leadership following the elevation of Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer.

Chairman Wontumi said his campaign will focus on restoring confidence within the party and positioning the NPP for victory in the 2028 general elections.

“We are ready. We are organized. We are built for the battle ahead,” he stated.
