Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has authorised the promotion of 12,802 police officers between January and the first week of February 2026, effectively eliminating a decade-long backlog within the Ghana Police Service.

The elevations, which span ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector, were confirmed by the IGP’s Secretariat. According to the Secretariat, the exercise comprised largely administrative upgrades and special promotions executed in accordance with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I. 76).

The announcement follows allegations of nepotism surrounding the recent promotions, claims the Secretariat has firmly denied, insisting that all processes adhered strictly to due procedure.

“All unit, district, divisional, and regional commanders across the country’s 25 police regions were directed to submit the names of officers due for promotion,” the Secretariat stated.

Of the total number promoted, about 11,900 junior-ranking officers were advanced by one rank after serving beyond the required four-year period. A further 600 officers were elevated based on special recommendations.

The Secretariat disclosed that numerous petitions had been submitted by officers citing delayed or unfair promotion practices, including cases involving personnel who had been on interdiction for more than five years but were subsequently acquitted and discharged. After review, those affected were granted their promotions.

In addition, families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty petitioned the Service, resulting in posthumous promotions for the deceased officers.
