The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, has delivered an emotional tribute in Parliament in honour of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Murtala Mohammed Ibrahim, describing his sudden passing as “painful” and deeply shocking.

His tribute formed part of statements commemorating the late lawmaker, which were read on Friday by Professor Alidu Seidu, the current Member of Parliament for Tamale Central.

Addressing the House, Mr. Dafeamekpor said he was devastated by the unexpected loss of his close friend and colleague.

“It’s so painful. Murtala wasn’t sick. He just vanished, disappeared. We never knew that we were losing one of our colleagues,” he said.

He urged Members of Parliament to cherish one another and live by the values of love and unity found in both the Bible and the Quran.

Close bond

Mr. Dafeamekpor recounted his strong personal and professional relationship with the late MP, noting that they had planned to travel together to Tamale shortly before he passed for community engagements.

He revealed that whenever he visited Tamale, the late Murtala ensured he had accommodation and supported him during outreach activities.

“Within the past eight years, we have been very close. He became a friend, a brother, and a confidant,” he said.

A formidable voice

Describing the late MP as fearless and principled, Mr. Dafeamekpor said Murtala Mohammed was a formidable voice both in and outside Parliament.

According to him, the Tamale Central legislator was known for his strong convictions, passion for public service, and dedication to his constituents.

“He had such an impact in Tamale Central and within the Tamale metropolis. Because of him, I am very grateful to live in Tamale,” he noted.

He added that Murtala’s commitment to parliamentary work left an indelible mark on the House and should serve as an example to current and future lawmakers.

Recalling past moments with the late MP, including his passionate tributes to fallen colleagues, Mr. Dafeamekpor said Murtala consistently preached love, unity, and compassion among lawmakers.

He reminded the House that political disagreements should never override mutual respect and humanity.

“At all material times, we must let love be the determinant, so that we don’t hurt each other too much,” he said.

He urged colleagues to emulate the dedication, passion, and commitment demonstrated by the late Tamale Central MP.
