The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to intensify efforts to deliver tangible development outcomes, stressing the need for policies that directly improve citizens’ lives.
Speaking on the state of the economy and government performance, he questioned whether the administration had undertaken major infrastructure projects or settled outstanding payments owed to contractors who relied on bank loans to execute public works.
“Last year, 2025, what did the government do? Did it pay contractors who had worked and borrowed from banks? If the economy is stagnating and we continue to talk about paper growth, I am interested in the cocoa farmer and the real impact on citizens,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin emphasised that macroeconomic indicators alone are insufficient if they fail to translate into better living conditions for ordinary Ghanaians.
According to him, economic growth must be reflected in job creation, improved incomes, business expansion, and enhanced social services.
“I am not here to talk about numbers that have no effect. If the numbers have made a positive impact, I will acknowledge and applaud them. But so far, one year in office, the government has not made any real impact,” he added.
The Minority Leader urged the government to prioritise timely payments to contractors, stimulate private sector growth, and implement practical interventions to support farmers, traders, and small businesses.
He maintained that effective governance must be measured by visible development and sustainable livelihoods, rather than policy declarations alone.
Observers say his remarks reflect growing public expectations for accelerated development and accountable leadership in the country’s economic recovery drive.
