Former Energy Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Boakye Agyarko, has pledged to lead efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party’s internal structures ahead of the next general elections, describing party unity and organisation as the foundation for electoral success.

Speaking in an interview on the party’s chairmanship ambition, Mr. Agyarko said his primary focus is to restore discipline and coordination within the NPP to enhance its chances of winning power.

“The way I will revamp the party to its former state is by ensuring that everybody plays their role. We cannot have a situation where individuals are doing their own things in different directions like lost sheep,” he said.

According to him, a strong and united party is the most reliable platform for winning elections

Building the NPP back to strength, he said, is key, because if the party is strong, that is what would be used to win an election.

Mr. Agyarko reaffirmed his unwavering support for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer, stressing that the party has already settled on its candidate.

“My task is to make sure Dr. Bawumia wins the election to become President of Ghana. I don’t want to be in opposition. It is not good. My duty is to move Bawumia from opposition into government,” he declared.

He added that the issue of leadership within the party had been conclusively resolved.

Bawumia, he said, is the candidate that has been selected to lead the NPP and there is no doubt about that adding, “That chapter is closed,” he said.

Mr. Agyarko noted that the party would provide a solid platform to boost the confidence of its candidate and support his presidential campaign.

Reflecting on previous elections, the former minister highlighted what he described as strategic differences between the two main political parties.

He observed that in past contests, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) benefited from strong party organisation despite fielding a less competitive candidate.

“In one election, the NDC had a weak candidate but a solid party, and the party was able to carry the candidate across the finish line,” he said.

In contrast, he argued, the NPP had previously presented a strong candidate without sufficient grassroots and organisational backing.

“The NPP had a good candidate but no strong party machinery, so there was no platform to carry him across the finish line,” he explained.

Mr. Agyarko said his current mission is to help build a resilient party structure capable of mobilising support nationwide.

According to him, the task now is to build a strong party that can carry the NPP candidate across the finish line in the next election.

He also disclosed that he recently held discussions with Dr. Bawumia in Somanya, where they exchanged views on the party’s electoral performance and future strategy.

“We had a frank discussion about the past elections and the way forward,” he noted.

Mr. Agyarko’s comments signal renewed efforts by senior party figures to close internal gaps and strengthen grassroots mobilisation as the NPP prepares for future contests.

With internal reorganisation and unity emerging as key priorities, the party is expected to intensify engagement with its base in the coming months.
