More than 40,000 registered voters in Ayawaso East are expected to head to the polls today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament in a closely watched by-election.

The contest follows the death of the constituency’s MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026, which left the seat vacant.

Following internal primaries, the New Patriotic Party selected Baba Ali as its parliamentary candidate.

On the other hand, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has nominated former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, to contest the seat.

Both parties have intensified campaigns in recent weeks, appealing to voters on issues of development, employment, and social services.

The Electoral Commission has assured residents of a smooth and orderly voting process.

The EC’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, said all necessary arrangements had been made.

The Commission also warned against vote-buying and other illegal practices, stressing that offenders will face sanctions.

Security personnel have been deployed across polling stations in the constituency to maintain law and order throughout the voting process.

Authorities say the security presence is aimed at preventing violence, intimidation, and electoral malpractice, while ensuring that voters can exercise their rights peacefully.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials to ensure a successful poll.

With Ayawaso East considered a strategic constituency, analysts believe the by-election result could serve as a test of public confidence in both major political parties.

The winner will represent the constituency in Parliament until the next general elections, making today’s vote crucial for local development and national politics.
