Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will contest any attempt by the government to extradite him from the United States, according to his lawyer, Frank Davies,

The former finance minister, he said, intends to contest any extradition proceedings initiated to compel his return to Ghana over corruption-related allegations.

The development follows reports that Mr Ofori-Atta is seeking permanent residency in the United States rather than returning to Ghana, where he believes he may not receive a fair trial.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Mr Davies confirmed that government has initiated steps toward an extradition request but stressed that the process would be contested through legal channels.

“The government has put in an extradition request. Following from that will be an extradition proceedings. So one way or the other, there is every indication that this matter will be contested. So, when we get there we will cross,” he said.

Mr Davies further suggested that the intention behind the extradition move is to secure Mr Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana to face the allegations levelled against him.

“I believe the intention of the extradition is to have Ken removed from the US and be brought down to Ghana,” he added.

The Ken Ofori-Atta extradition case comes as the former finance minister faces scrutiny over corruption-related claims linked to his tenure in office, although details of the alleged offences and any formal charges have not yet been fully disclosed publicly.

Legal analysts say the Ken Ofori-Atta extradition case could involve complex court proceedings in the United States, as extradition matters often require judicial review and diplomatic engagement between governments.

If formal proceedings begin, the Ken Ofori-Atta extradition case is expected to attract significant legal and political attention both in Ghana and internationally.
