The Chairperson of the Women’s Caucus in the Parliament of Ghana, Comfort Doyoe, has called for renewed national commitment to advancing gender equity and increasing women’s participation in leadership as Ghana commemorates International Women’s Day.

Hon. Doyoe, delivering a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, noted that this year’s celebration, being observed nationally from March 8 to April 8, provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made by women.

The celebration, she said, also looks at addressing persistent challenges that hinder their full participation in governance and development.

She stressed that Ghana’s performance at the recently concluded 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, where the country’s representation of women in Parliament drew global attention.

According to her, Ghana ranks 149th out of 188 countries, with women making up only 14.5 percent of Members of Parliament.

“This statistic reminds us that, although progress has been made, much more work remains to ensure women have equal opportunities to participate in leadership and decision-making,” she stated.

Hon. Doyoe stressed that empowering women to take up leadership roles is essential for building inclusive, equitable, and prosperous societies. She urged Parliament, government, civil society, and citizens to work collectively toward creating an enabling environment for women to thrive.

The Women’s Caucus also encouraged female legislators to engage directly with women in their constituencies during the celebration period. She said such interactions would inspire young women and girls to aspire to leadership positions and actively contribute to national development.

She called for sustained action, urging stakeholders to translate commitments into tangible efforts that promote gender equality across all sectors of society.
